Truely wonderful. When compiling a list of must see destinations before you die the ancient city of Ankgor will be near the top, perhaps second only to the Emirates Stadium. Angkor Wat is the famous temple that you may have heard of, more likely you will have seen Angelina Jolie shoot baddies in Ta Prohm, both of which are in the city of Ankgor. Ankgor was originaly developed in the 12th centruy and has been added to over time, as well as suffering damage at the hands of 20th century looters and the Khymer Rouge. We spent two days here walking around, taking pictures and going wow a lot. At its height in 12th century Ankgor was a city of over one million people, at the same time about fifty thousand lived in London. Ankgor is not listed as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, largely because the Greeks who composed the list (as well as winning Euro 2004) didn't know that it existed.

Angkor est une ancienne cité (abandonnée pendant plusieurs centaines d'annees meme si elle etait habitee par un million de personnes au 12e siecle) et maintenant est un site protegé, de plusieurs milliers de kilometres carrés sur lequel s'etalent des tas de temples - qui datent aussi pour la plupart du 12e siecle. Entre chaque temple, des arbres, des allees de verdure et une riviere enorme magnifique. En matiere de batiments historiques, c'est la premiere grande surprise du voyage. Vraiment des lieux athmospheriques incroyables. Chaque temple a sa particularité et regorge de symboles et de mises en scenes qu'on n'a pas pu vraiment interpreter. Il aurait fallu un guide d'histoire de l'art pendant 2 semaines. Nous, on avait juste un passe pour deux jours, et un scooter man pour nous conduire d'un temple à l'autre, mais on peut en voir beaucoup plus si on veut. L'un des temples est resté dans mon imagination car il offrait vraiment un decors completement surnaturel, avec des arbres qui poussent entrelacés aux pierres. C'est Ta Prohm (photos 7 et 8); le film Tomb Raider avec Angelina Jolie a été filmé la-bas. Le plus connu, Angkor Wat (photos 1,2 et 3) est majestueux et massif avec plusieurs etages a l'interieur. Dans pas mal d'entre eux il faut escalader et pratiquement descendre en rappel (photo 5), aucune protection pour les touristes evidemment...on n'est pas en Europe non plus! Assez dangereux quand-meme surtout quand il pleut des trombes...On a eu beaucoup d'averses au Cambodge donc les ciels des photos sont souvent gris. En general on se prenait toujours une bonne saucee vers 4 h de l'apres midi, puis plus tard en soiree. Le soir on sortait souvent à Siem Reap, là ou se trouvait notre hotel, car on y a retrouvé les gens de Twickenham qu'on a rencontrés dans la montagne au Nepal...le monde est quand-meme sacrement petit.
